Angelo’s has a habit of making claims and promises that they can’t back up. They tend to tell the community what they want us to hear, but never seem to put what they said in writing. Many times their promises directly contradict their landfill application that was filed with the state.
They have been honest about one thing: They have had absolutely no experience operating a Class 1 landfill before.
Their public relations materials want you to believe that Angelo’s landfill is an “organic composting and recycle center”. This can’t be found anywhere in their original application submitted to Department of Environmental Protection.
How will they dispose of the leachate? It should go to a designated wastewater facility, but Pasco doesn’t have one for that use. It would cost taxpayers between $5 -$10 million to build a treatment center.
The applicant listed themselves as “Angelo’s Recycled Materials” on one-page handouts given out at a community meeting. Funny, since all of their applications list them as Angelo’s Aggregate Materials. No other mention of “Angelo’s Recycled Materials” could be found. Are they ashamed of their real name?
Angelo’s continually wants us to believe that their liner – a 6/100 of an inch thick piece of material – would be enough keep the leachate from leaving the site. What they failed to mention is that some manufacturers only warrant their materials for 12-18 months.
They have claimed that property around the facility won’t lose their value. Yet, their own studies confirm that landfills cause land values to drop. This drop has already begun. At first Angelo’s originally offered $34,000/acre to secure land to build their landfill. Now they only pay $23,500 for the same parcels, that’s a 30 percent decline and the landfill is not even here yet!
