Today's Letters: What's wrong with NIMBY?

February 20, 2008

I have read with interest all the articles appearing in the Times as it relates to the landfill outside Dade City and have attended a meeting where Carl Roth and John Arnold have spoken. I find Mr. Roth passionate in his point of view and I find Angelo's Aggregate Materials very lacking in actual engineering information. Mr. Arnold says those of us who live in the area of the proposed landfill and compost center have a "not in my back yard attitude." Why would we not have that attitude? Read More »

Landfill developer's generosity is suspect

January 18, 2008

Angelo's Aggregate Materials likes to point to a thick layer of clay it would use to line its proposed landfill as evidence of its environmental safeguards for rural east Pasco. The company says less about the thick layer of cash it is using to line the campaign treasuries of public officials at the same time it seeks state and local approval for what could become a 1,000-acre landfill, composting and recycling operation near Florida's Green Swamp. Landfill plan needs a careful eye

December 18, 2007

County commissioners finally took bold action and in 1991 built the state-of-the-art "resource recovery" plant in Shady Hills. The idea was to burn garbage to create electricity - enough to light 15,000 homes. The ash would be stored in cells with thick seals to protect the groundwater. The trouble is, the plant is running at capacity, forcing the county to ship excess waste to Osceola County. Read More »

Opposition to a new landfill outside Dade City has often taken a proenvironment stance: Protect our waters, protect the Green Swamp, protect the Withlacoochee River. December 5, 2007

State Sen. Victor Crist, R-Tampa, weighed in on the Dade City landfill controversy Tuesday, filing legislation that would severely restrict where new landfills could be built in Florida. Incinerator better than alternative

December 5, 2007

What does air pollution from ships have to do with garbage incineration? What about the effects of toxins leaching into our water supply, water that we drink and in which we wash our dishes, bath and swim? What about the air pollution from rotting, stinking garbage? What about the waste of land which could be better utilized for recreation and the preservation of some of our county's natural beauty? Read More »
